How to get to Livigno

Livigno is located in upper Italy on the border to Switzerland. It's 4.700 inhabitants live at an average height of 1.800 metres above sea level. Livigno can be accessed by three different routes each passing customs.

A word on customs: Dating back as far as the 7. century Livigno had been granted a duty free status based on its extremely remote location in the Alps. European Community rules do not apply for the export of spirits, tobacco and other goods. Thorough checks are absolutely normal when the custom houses are passed so it is advisable to stay within the allowed limits.

Snow chains are definitely required during the winter season. Depending on the actual situation the access to Livigno may be possible without chains but with frequent heavy snowfalls chains are an absolute must in your equipment.

Forcola di Livigno-Pass
This pass is only open from May through November. It leads into the Bernina pass on the Swiss side. A passport or ID card is required to cross the border.
Passo di Foscagno / Passo di Eira This access from the Italian side is via Bormio and Sondrio and is kept open all year round. You will see some magnificent Alpine scenery here and the trip can be combined with a trip to the Passo di Stelvio during the summer.

On the way to Livigno you pass Trepalle which is Europe's highest permanent settlement (2.250 metres above sea level).
